DKMS UK is proudly celebrating our 3,000th donor, Jamie

18-year-old Jamie from Ireland becomes our 3,000th donor after joining the register through our new Generation Lifesaver schools programme.

3,000 second chances at life

DKMS UK is excited to share that our 3,000th donor is Jamie McGuigan, an 18-year-old student from Strabane in Ireland. He is currently preparing for his A-Level exams at Strabane Academy, with the hope of studying Marine Biology at university.

It was at Strabane Academy that Jamie met our Donor Recruitment team and joined the register back in December. His school was one of the first participants in Generation Lifesaver, our new schools programme.

Generation Lifesaver is a national initiative giving students aged 16-18 the chance to register as potential stem cell donors to help save the lives of people living with blood cancer and blood disorders.

A double celebration

Jamie didn't just become our 3,000th donor, however, he also became the first person from Generation Lifesaver to go on to donate stem cells.

His story is a powerful reminder of the impact early awareness and education about joining the stem cell register can have.

Reflecting on the experience, Jamie said:

“DKMS UK kept in touch through the whole process. You could hear in every phone call how excited they were about finding me, which definitely gave me a boost of encouragement.”

“I feel very grateful to be able to give someone another chance at life, and I would definitely do it again... At 18 years old, I didn’t realise that I could have such an impact on someone’s life, and it all started with simply saying yes.”

Our shared mission

Each of our teams played a part in this incredible moment, contributing to the enormous collective effort focused on giving donors and patients the best possible experience throughout their donation journey.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped us reach this milestone, and to every donor who has said yes to offering someone a second chance at life.

Here's to the next milestone!
